Profile: I completed my Masters in Conservation and Rural Development from the University of Kent. There, I did my dissertation on the involvement of local communities in Malaysia in the scuba diving tourism industry, and whether this involvement (or lack of it) had any impact on their perceptions of marine conservation programmes and governance mechanisms in those areas. Before doing my Masters, I got the opportunity to work in an organisation involved in marine conservation and marine tourism in Goa, where I also developed a keen interest in reconciling the needs and interests of coastal communities with the goals of groups involved in environmental conservation. Throughout my school and college years, I’ve always had an interest in sports and the outdoors, and I’m currently assisting in developing a programme that aims to link sports, community wellbeing and environmental education for communities in Odisha and the Andamans.
