Profile: Mahaboob, while pursuing his Masters in Social Work, got many opportunities to interact with different communities and understand their challenges. These experiences motivated him to work for the well-being of local communities. He is particularly interested in working with communities that are highly dependent on natural resources. He believes that empowering communities to use their resources in a sustainable way can help conserve nature as well as livelihoods.
He hails from Kadmat Island in Lakshadweep and has always desired to work for his native islands. He is presently co-ordinating Dakshin Foundation’s community-based fisheries monitoring efforts in Lakshadweep. Through this work, he hopes to work towards sustainable management of our unique pole and line tuna fishery and also help the local fishing community in Lakshadweep.
In the future, he wants to work towards preserving the traditional indigenous knowledge of the fishing community in Lakshadweep and passing it on to future generations. He would also like to work on improving environmental education in the Lakshadweep Islands.
